The Boxwood Hedge Chronicles: An Adventure in Puppyhood

Welcome back to another delightful episode of "Life with Bernie". This time, we find our lively young friend engaged in a thrilling standoff over our boxwood hedge, the very embodiment of puppyhood curiosity and playfulness.

In the accompanying photo, you see Bernie draped over our 3-foot wide, 3-foot tall boxwood hedge, peering down intently at the ground. Out of frame, there's a ball, and beyond that, Tango, Bernie's cousin and beloved playmate. Bernie's whole posture suggests a challenge, a silent taunt to Tango: "Who will reach the ball first?"

Although I can't recall who was victorious that day, I'm almost certain Bernie didn't mind either way. Victory wasn't the point; the fun was in the game and the company, and as long as he had those, Bernie was a happy pup.

In the photo, Bernie, so new to our home, is sporting his harness, tethered to a 50-foot yellow rope. Not a constraint, but a gentle reminder for him to stay close while playing in our yard, which borders the wilderness. As it turned out, we may have been overly cautious. Bernie seemed to find more joy in our company, and with Tango, than the promise of woodland adventures.

As for our boxwood hedge, it miraculously survived all the romping, crashing, and playful ambushes that Bernie initiated. He had an odd fascination with that hedge, treating it as part fort, part wresting partner, and part amusement park. It was pure puppy joy encapsulated in every moment he spent around that hedge.

As Bernie's escapades continue, we'll delve further into our heartwarming journey of growth, fun, and companionship in our next blog post. This upcoming chapter is particularly close to my heart as it paints a tender picture of Bernie and me lying on our backs, legs, in his case, arms in mine, stretched out overhead. Surprisingly, we are about the same size, despite my being 5'2" - a testament to just how big our dear Bernie is!
